This is the same as saying to my husband that he can’t hold my hand in public because we will be flaunting our heterosexuality. What an absurd thing to say. Of course we can hold hands in public. Why not, we are a couple in love. So why can’t my gay boys walk hand in hand with someone they love. Because society doesn’t like it. But the only way this will change is for it to happen and people get used to it. Gay people are not doing anything we heterosexuals don’t do. They are being themselves. Showing and receiving affection from someone you love is very important for our well being.
In fact many gay people are more likely not to show affection in public because of the negativity that it may bring.....This may look like flaunting but again it’s just being themselves.
This is an example of what Blogging For Truth looks like........
It drives me crazy when people say that GLBT people are flaunting their sexuality.
ReplyDeleteIs because you assumed that I was straight? Is it because in your mind you are uncomfortable, therefore it must be my fault?
Cara (my partner) and I don't hold hands in public, don't kiss in public, make it a point to not do certain things in public that would label us as a couple.
Why? We don't want an ass whooping by people who think we are flaunting being queer. We have done these things in the past. It just got tiring of being a freak show for so many people. Maybe we should have a GLBT kiss in?
I say in the world of today, if you have love you should show it. People need to see that love isn't something that people flaunt. Love is something that surpasses everyone's comfort level maybe at some point. Because love transcends and transforms.
sorry got on a little rant there.
Ceara
I love this rant, LOL.
ReplyDeleteIt is a sore spot with me too Ceara, Lorrie and I hold hands here in Reno where it is hardly noticed and in Philly when I am there. I love holding her hand! I just LOVE HER!!!
Now, when we go to other parts of the country, it depends, there are places we have been where we don't because like you, we fear the reactions.
We aren't trying to flaunt anything, it is just so natural to reach for her hand when we are walking around together.
